CNN gets funny

Comic given a show on news channel

International news channel CNN is launching its first comedy show.

The station has signed up comic D L Hughley to front the topical series, seen as a response to the increasing popularity of programmes such as Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

In the new show, tentatively titled D L Hughley Breaks the News, the comedian will perform stand-up and sketches and – likeThe Daily Show – interview newsmakers and reporters.

CNN/US president Jon Klein said: ‘D L is a very thoughtful, well-informed guy with unpredictable views, and I’ve always admired his comedy.

‘The basic premise of the show is, what if a guy like him was let loose in the CNN building for a weekend after the lights went off?’

The show will air at 11pm on Saturday nights from October 25, just before Saturday Night Live starts on the rival NBC network.

CNN does air an ‘international version’ of The Daily Show on its channels outside America.
