Women wanted to make comedy films

'This genre is ripe for exploitation'

Movie producers have launched a project to encourage funny women to make comedy movies.

Under the Last Laugh scheme, up to 15 writers and performers will be invited to a three-day residential retreat to work on their ideas.

Then the participants will have the chance to pitch their suggestions to production company Warp X, which specialises in low-budget films.

Organisers said: ‘We believe there is a real commercial opportunity for female-driven comedy films. Women aged 35 plus make up the biggest single part of UK cinema audiences, and comedy is the most financially successful film genre.

‘We are also struck by the noticeable lack of woman-made feature comedy… the comedy genre is ripe for exploitation by female comedy creatives

‘Through Last Laugh we intend to equip some outstanding British women with the skills, confidence, contacts and support they need to make high quality, fresh and funny feature films.’
