Blaze hits sitcom hotel

Benidorm venue evacuated

The hotel where Johnny Vegas comedy Benidorm is filmed was hit by fire yesterday.

More than 900 people were evacuated from the Sol Pelicanos Ocas after the blaze began in the kitchens.

Thick black smoke engulfed the kitchen, pool and lobby, but casualties were limited to six minor incidents of smoke inhalation and shock. No one was taken to hospital and fire crews had the blaze under control within two hours. Local fire brigade sources say there was no significant damage.

The third series of the ITV1 sitcom is currently in production, but the fire will not affect the exterior filming, which is not scheduled to take place until January. Any repair work is expected to be completed long before then.
