Isabel's bride and joy

Fay developing wedding sitcom

Isabel Fay is developing her 2007 Edinburgh show into a potential six-part sitcom, with the help of leading comedy producers Hat Trick.

The production company spotted her show Altar Ego at last year’s Fringe, and asked her to write a pilot script to pitch to broadcasters.

The show revolved around Blodwin, an employee at an old people’s home, who creates a fictional fiance to impress a work rival – then gets caught in the ever-increasing lie.

Fay said: ‘They were keen on doing something with the bride character. At first we thought of doing five-minute episodes online, as a ‘choose your own adventure’ idea when viewers could determine the course of the plot.

‘But we released we needed 32 scenes, and it would be longer than a feature film.

‘I’ve got one draft script, which still needs work, and outlines for six more. It’ll be a traditional sitcom – something like Worst Week Of My Life where all sorts of things keep piling up on poor Blodwin.

‘The unusual aspect is that her fantasies will be shown through her eyes like old-fashioned movies such as Casablanca. It’s Brief Encounter at a dolphin park!’

Mark Talbot, who is developing the idea at Hat Trick, said the show appealed because ‘the comedy was nice – very much like Gavin & Stacey – and we thought that was something we can do with.

‘Isabel is a versatile performer, and there were a lot of laugh-out-loud moments in the show.’

Hat Trick hope to pitch the idea to broadcasters including the BBC following Fay’s run at this year’s Fringe with the show Don’t Let A Gift Horse In The House.

You can next see Fay at Chortle’s Fast Fringe showcase at the Arts Theatre, London, on Monday, where she is one of 28 acts performing snippets from their festival shows. Click for tickets.
