Shazia named columnist of the year

Shazia Mirza has been named magazine columnist of the year for her fortnightly articles in New Statesman magazine.

The Muslim stand-up took the prize in the consumer category at the Periodical Publishers Association awards in London, after judges said her column in the political weekly ‘gives an insight into a whole culture that does not have a voice in the British media’.

The Guardian has previously praised her, too, saying: ‘She writes as a feisty young Muslim woman with a sel-deprecating and needle sharp humour, prepared to break taboos and make us think about the most controversial issues of our time, from suicide bombers to virginity’.
