Gavin & Stacey go to America

NBC snaps up remake rights

Gavin & Stacey is to be the latest British comedy to be remade in the States.

The NBC network has bought the rights to the acclaimed comedy about a whirlwind romance between an Essex boy and a Welsh girl struck up after a series of phone conversations.

Its creators and stars - James Corden and Ruth Jones – will help oversee the American remake.

Corden, 29, told The Times: ‘It’s really exciting. The idea is that Gavin will come from New Jersey, which has the same relation to New York as Essex does to London. Stacey will be from South Carolina. They meet in Times Square.

‘I hope they keep the British names but they may have to change them.’

The show won both Jones and Corden best newcomer accolades at last year’s British Comedy Awards.

The second series, which revolves around post-wedding blues and pregnany, starts on BBC Three later this month.
