Mosque sitcom honoured

Humanitarian award for Canadian show

A Canadian comedy show is to win an international humanitarian award previously won by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and Muhammad Ali.

Little Mosque on the Prairie, a sitcom about a Muslim community in a small Canadian town, will receive the Search for Common Ground Award in New York next month.

The award aims to recognise individuals and organisations that find common ground between those in conflict.

,Executive producer Mary Darling said: ‘This is a very humbling award to receive and it feels like a confirmation of our vision.≤p>.‘We wanted to create a show that would allow people to laugh while hopefully breaking down stereotypes.

‘We felt that comedy would be a great way to inspire people to dialogue together and to build understanding of each other no matter what their beliefs

The show, below, airs on the CBC network, and is also broadcast in Israel, Turkey, Dubai, Gaza and the West Bank.
