The Underbelly has officially launched its Edinburgh Fringe programme, the first major event at this year’s festival.

Although the festival does not officially start until Sunday, previews began yesterday, and the Underbelly held a press show to introduce some of its acts.

Ian Stone hosted the entertainment, which included Mitch Benn, a musical version of Debbie Does Dallas and an acrobatic/beat box group called The Tom Tom Club.

Underbelly directors Ed and Charlie Wood caused some controversy by teasing the Assembly Rooms, which had their longer press launch later that evening.

They handed out ‘survival kits’ for the show, including ear-plugs to drown out boring performances and Pro-Plus tablets to help the audience keep awake.
