Gervais up for another US award

Ricky Gervais and Extras have been nominated for four primetime Emmys, the most prestigious award for American TV.

He has made the shortlist for best actor in a comedy for Extras, while he and Stephen Merchant share nominations for best director and best writing

Sir Ian McKellen is up for best guest star for his appearance on the show, which airs on HBO in the States..

Also up for best comedy actor is Steve Carell, star of the NBC version of Gervais’s The Office, plus Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock, Tony Shalhoub for Monk and Charlie Sheen for Two And A Half Men.

The Office is also in the running for best comedy, against Entourage, 30 Rock, Two And A Half Men and Ugly Betty.

Winners will be announced on September 16.

Nominees for best actress in a comedy are America Ferrera for Ugly Betty, Tina Fey for 30 Rock, Julia Louis-Dreyfus for The New Adventures of Old Christine, Mary-Louise Parker for Weeds and Felicity Huffman for Desperate Housewives.

For best supporting actor in a comedy: Kevin Dillon and Jeremy Piven is Johnny Drama and Ari Gold, respectively in Entourage; Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother; Rainn Wilson as s Dwight Schrute in The Office and Jon Cryer as Alan Harper in Two And A Half Men.

Best supporting actress in a comedy: Jaime Pressly as Joy Turner in My Name Is Earl, Jenna Fischer as Pam Beesley in The Office, Holland Taylor as Evelyn Harper in Two And A Half Men; Conchata Ferrell as Berta inTwo And A Half Men; Vanessa Williams as Wilhelmina Slater in Ugly Betty; and Elizabeth Perkins as Celia Hodes in Weeds.

Bets variety, music or comedy series: The Colbert Report, The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, Late Night With Conan O’Brien and Late Show With David Letterman.

In non-comedy categories, Hugh Laurie was nominated for best actor in a drama for House.
