Planned Fringe venue falls through

An Edinburgh comedy venue has had to be abandoned just days before the start of the Fringe – because it hasn’t been built in time.

Nottingham-based comedy club Just The Tonic had planned to run a festival venue in the Caves off Cowgate

But it has recently become apparent that work on the venue would not be finished on schedule – forcing all shows programmed there to find a new home.

All comedy shows, including Big Value Comedy, Howard Read, Stephen Carlin, Pappy's Fun Club have been accommodated in C Venues Soco, the temporary tented venues to be erected on the ‘gap site’ of the former Gilded Balloon, just yards from the Caves.

And Lost Vagueness, who produce the all-night field at Glastonbury, have moved their late-night cabaret show to The Jam House in Queen Street.

The new venues were founf by Just The Tonic boss Darrell Martin, and the C Soco shows will still be branded under his company's umbrella.

One promoter with a show at Just The Tonic said: ‘It’s all a bit last minute, but as the new venue is part of C venues, it at least widens the publicity and marketing reach for the acts.’

Carlin said: 'Darrell's done a terrific job in finding another venue so close to the start of the Fringe and being on the site of a big Fringe player will do us no harm, either.'

The change of venue will not affect shows in the Baby Belly venue, which occupies neighbouring caves.
