Veteran comic fractures back

Veteran comedian Phyllis Diller has fractured her back, just days before celebrating her 90th birthday.

The ‘extremely painful’ injury has caused her to cancel an appearance on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show on Tuesday.

Her manager Milt Suchin said she ‘twisted the wrong way [causing] a minor injury, some kind of a fracture. The doctors say to rest and let it heal. She's in great spirits.’

Diller, who provides the voice of Peter's mother on Family Guy, was also due to appear at the Television Critics Association this week, but had to cancel that too.

‘It’s very disappointing,’ Suchin told the Hollywood Reporter. ‘She was going to do a standup bit but she really can't stand up properly.

"She's not immobile. She is functioning normally.’

Diller, who turns 90 on July 17, is expected to be off work for about a month.
