Cheers star lands Dibley remake

Kirstie Alley will be taking over the Dawn French role when the Vicar Of Dibley is remade for American TV.

The former Cheers star will shoot a pilot episode of the show, renamed the Minister Of Divine, for Fox TV.

The script is based on a Richard Curtis original, but plays up the clergywoman’s rebellious past.

And the setting has been shifted to the Deep South town of Divine, Georgia, which Fox exec Susan Levison has previously praised as a smart move.

‘Setting the show in the South takes advantage of a culture that embraces the church and its customs,’ she said.

She added that Alley’s character is ‘a woman with a past who's trying to make amends, and isn't afraid to call things as she sees them’.
