Merchant of music

Extras co-creator lands DJing slot

Stephen Merchant has landed his own show on BBC 6 Music in the New Year.

The Office co-creator’s show will go out on Sundays from 3pm to 5pm starting on January 14.

Merchant started his career on pirate radio. He then worked a breakfast DJ in his hometown of Bristol and met Ricky Gervais when they both worked at London radio station XFM – where they later co-hosted a show with Karl Pillington that became their record-breaking podcasts.

But this will be his first solo show

Merchant says: ‘When I was a teenager I used to run a mobile disco for weddings and birthdays, so DJing is in my blood.

‘The 6 Music show will be all about the music –but obviously if things are not working, I'll just stick on C'mon Eileen."

6 Music controller Lesley Douglas added: ‘Stephen Merchant’s wit, warmth and love of music makes him a perfect presenter.

‘I am delighted he has agreed to join us, I have long admired his work on radio and I do, of course, love him in The Office and Extras.’
