Kay to star in racing cartoon

Peter Kay is to lend his voice to a new animated children’s series set in the world of motor racing.

Roary the Racing Car is the next project from Bob the Builder creator Keith Chapman, and also includes  racing legend Sir Stirling Moss in the cast.

The Phoenix Nights star, currently providing the voice of PC Mackintosh in Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit, will play Chris the mechanic.

The character has an encyclopaedic mechanical knowledge of all things, but is said to be scatty and forgetful.

The series is made by animation specialists Cosgrove Hall Films, the company behind Dangermous and Bill and Ben and  was unveiled at the Mipcom TV festival.

It is expected to be ready by mid-2007 and all five terrestrial broadcasters are said to be interested in airing it, MediaGuardian reports.
