Making light of the situation

Doddy's show goes on, despite power cut

Ken Dodd has performed a gig by torchlight after a power cut plunged his theatre into darkness.

The 76-year-old grabbed a torch, pointed it at his feet, and started an impromptu tap-dance when the lights failed at Stockport's Plaza Theatre at the weekend.

He told the audience: "I'm not stopping the show, just because you've got technical problems."

A stagehand then shone another torch at his microphone stand, and the show continued.

Fan Bill Dean, 49, told the Manchester Evening News: "It was incredible. Doddy hardly missed a beat.

"The microphone wasn't working, so he tried shouting for a bit and then did a bit of a dance. He kept going until the interval and then went off for the electrician to fix the problem."

Box office manager Peter Johnson added: "He is a real professional and didn't want to sell anyone short. There are not many around like him."
