Frank goes to Hollywood

Oscar bid for Father Ted star's film

A short film starring Father Ted's Frank Kelly has won a place in a Los Angeles film festival.

The screening makes Yu Ming Is Ainm Dom eligible for an Oscar nomination in September.

The film, which also stars comedian Paddy C. Courtney alongside the Father Jack actor, has already won the best Irish short and best first Irish short at the Galway Film Fleadh in July.

Written and directed by Daniel O'Hara, the short tells of a Chinese grocer who decides to move to Ireland, so learns Gaelic in order to fit in - only to find nobody understands him when he arrives in Dublin.

It will be screened at the Laemmles cinema on Sunset Boulevard from September 16 to 18. The following week, the film features in the New York Film Fleadh's annual shorts night.
