James Acaster and Kiri Pritchard-McLean lead the field

James Acaster and Kiri Pritchard-McLean were both double winners at the Chortle Awards tonight.

Acaster scooped the coveted best show accolade for his latest stand-up offering, Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999, while he also won the acclaim of his peers by scooping the Comedians’ Comedian award.

Meanwhile, Pritchard-Mclean won the award for breakthrough act, as well as being named best compere for the second year running.

Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith were also double winners, taking home the TV award for Inside No 9 and the best tour award for the League Of Gentlemen comeback show they performed with Mark Gatiss, that was also written by Jeremy Dyson.

Other winners including The Mash Report’s Rachel Parris for best music and variety act, Billy Connolly for his book Made In Scotland, Katherine Ryan for best TV comedian Sarah Keyworth for best newcomer.

Shortlists are drawn up by a panel of industry experts, then put to a vote of Chortle readers – with 5,000 taking part this year.

Hannah Gadsby’s  stand-up special Nanette arriving on Netflix was named event of the year, with Chortle editor Steve Bennett saying: ‘’This astounding live show has also become a game-changer in what a TV stand-up special can be, and has rightly made her a major player in international comedy.’
