Nina Conti

Nina Conti

Date of birth: 25-08-1973

The daughter of actors Tom Conti and Kara Wilson, Nina Conti initially followed in their footsteps and became part of the Royal Shakespeare Company. However she found it was not for her, and with the encouragement of her mentor Ken Campbell took up ventriloquism on the London comedy circuit, with her puppet sidekick, Monkey.

In 2002, she won the BBC New Comedy Award – though it took her five more years to make her debut with her first solo full-length show, Complete and Utter Conti. The following years she won the Barry Award for this show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, tying with Kristen Schaal.

Acting roles include Black Books, Holby City,  Christopher Guest's 2006 film, For Your Consideration and 2013 mockumentary series  Family Tree.

Cinema release for Nina Conti's Sunlight

Co-starring Shenoah Allen

Nina Conti and Shenoah Allen’s film Sunlight is to get a cinema release.

The movie is described as ‘an hilariously dark and unconventional love story, following two people on the edge of life who find purpose and romance through an unlikely connection’.

Allen – of the Pajama Men double act and Conti’s real-life partner – plays Roy, whose attempt to end his life fails when Jane (Conti) a woman dressed in a monkey suit intervenes.

The unconventional road-trip movie premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival last year, and will now  be screened at a number of Picture House cinemas and Home in Manchester from October 17 – ahead of digital release on November 28.

Conti, who also directed the film, said: ‘This feels like a big moment, and we went all-in for seven years to get here.

‘I couldn't be more proud of how original and funny and dark Sunlight is, and Shenoah was such a fiercely creative ally.

‘It's an emotional metaphor in more ways than I can name; a woman trapped in a monkey suit is personal all the way down. We were overjoyed at the response from audiences in the US, the screenings were a riot, and it’s a true thrill to unleash it in the UK to kick some ass.'

Christopher Guest of This is Spinal Tap was executive producer on the project.
