Lucy Porter writes a 'rallying cry' for middle-aged women

Comedian's first book out this summer

Lucy Porter has written her first book, entitled Middle-Aged Women Get Sh*t Done.

The title – out in August – is described as ‘part tribute, part-rallying cry’, with publishers  Wildfire saying: ‘Let’s face it: midlife women are the glue that binds society together. They are invincible, all-powerful, and you mess with them at your peril.

‘But they're also quite knackered and they'd like a break please.’

Their blurb adds: In this hilarious and irreverent manifesto, Lucy Porter steers us through the trials of being the exhausted meat in the middle of the sandwich generation with her trademark wit, warmth and a hefty dose of righteous rage.’

Porter told  trade website The Bookseller: ‘I'm so grateful to Wildfire for letting me write this book. It's essentially a love letter to middle-aged women, because I don't think we get enough love letters.

‘These days I mostly just get reminders from the GP to check my blood pressure, emails trying to sell me walk-in baths and texts from my husband about the broken washing machine or the cat's anal abscess. I hope it will bring some comfort to others who are struggling with crushing responsibilities and creaking joints.’

Lindsay Davies, consultant editor at the publisher, called the book ‘an ode to the awe-inspiring capabilities of middle-aged women… written in Lucy's brilliantly funny, keenly observant and inimitable style.’

Porter previously co-wrote a book about quiz shows with The Chase's Jenny Ryan in 2023 called  Fingers On Buzzers – a tie-in to the podcast. of the same name they previously hosted together.

She is currently on tour with her stand-up show Let Yourself Go. Lucy Porter tour dates
