First TV presenting gig for comic Jim Smith

Stand-up and farmer hosts woodworking challenge show Loggerheads

Comedian and farmer Jim Smith has landed his first TV presenting gig.

The stand-up, who also runs a cattle farm in Perthshire, is fronting the new BBC show Loggerheads, which pits woodworking experts against each other.

Each team must create something out of Timber freshly cut from some of Scotland’s most scenic forests – a special challenge as freshly felled Timber is said to be notoriously tricky to work with.

Smith told the Scottish Sun that when he was offered the job ‘I grabbed the opportunity…. I love comedy but there’s always pressure because you need to be funny.

‘But I love being myself in front of the camera and hopefully we’ll get a second series and it goes on to do great things.’

Contestants include a septuagenarian chainsaw carver and a furniture maker who previously created a set for a Harry Styles video.

Smith told the Glasgow-based Herald newspaper: ‘It is exactly what you see on the show. They chop down the tree and 24 hours later have these wonderful masterpieces.

‘It sits well coming off the back of Covid because folk did start new hobbies, so hopefully it will inspire people to give it a go.’

Loggerheads will start on BBC Scotland on Thursday at 8.30pm.
