The Other One heads to America

US streaming deal for BBC One comedy

BBC One comedy The Other One is to air in America.

Streaming service Acorn TV, part of AMC Networks, has brought the rights to the seven-part series, which it will broadcast in the US, Canada and Mexico next month,

The sitcom stars Siobhan Finneran and Ellie White as half-sisters, who only discover each other’s existence after the death of their bigamist father.

Rebecca Front, Lauren Socha, Caroline Quentin and Stephen Tompkinson also star in the show, which was written by Holly Walsh and Pippa Brown.

Meanwhile, Acorn’s sister streaming service, Sundance Now, has bought the rights to Tim Minchin’s Sky One comedy Upright, about a shabby musician, who is driving across Australia with his piano, when he picks up a runaway girl.

The comic said: ‘I’m so excited that our show has made it to the US, and thrilled that it has landed at Sundance Now. The reactions to Upright in the UK and Australia have been like nothing I’ve ever experienced, and I can’t wait for Americans to see it.

‘It’s quintessentially Aussie and, at the same time, utterly universal. And I’m pretty sure it’ll make you really laugh and properly cry, which – for me – is always the goal.’

The news comes on the same day it was announced that SBS Belgium had snapped up the rights to the revived Spitting Image.
