Geoff Norcott’s Radio 4 show to return
Comic back to discuss 'the complex pool of masculinity'
Geoff Norcott’s Working Men’s Club – the comic’s stand-up series about modern masculinity – is returning to Radio 4 this spring/
Four new episodes of Geoff Norcott’s Working Men’s Club will air in April and May, it has been announced today,
The show, which has been nominated for best stand up or sketch comedy at the BBC Audio Drama Awards, uses the setting of a working men’s club to examine the challenges facing men today and offer practical solutions.
Norcott said: ‘I got very kind feedback for the first series then, lo and behold, the government announce the first ever men’s health strategy,’ he said. ‘Not being arrogant, but you do the math.’
The comedian, who recently became an ambassador for the Association of Male Health and Wellbeing, believes the new series arrives at an important moment.
‘For this series we’re recording in the post John Lewis rave-dad era,’ he said. ‘The idea that the simple act of being male might not be one long running high-five is starting to gain traction, but the message still needs to be amplified.’
The shows will be recorded in Leeds and Newcastle, with Norcott tackling topics including what it feels like to be a dad to a small baby, why men love gambling, and whether middle-aged white men are behind all the division in society, as Gary Neville suggested.
‘But mainly I want it to be funny,’ he added. ‘Yes, this show will dive headfirst into the complex pool of masculinity, but it might also do a belly-flop just for a laugh.’
The four episodes broadcast on Thursdays at 6.30pm, starting April 23.
Norcott’s other broadcast credits include Have I Got News For You, Live At The Apollo, 8 Out of 10 Cats and The News Quiz.
