Barry Castagnola

Barry Castagnola has been performing stand-up in the UK and internationally since the late Nineties – when he blagged his way onto the stage at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles. He has appeared in the Channel 4 show Experimental and presented The YES/NO Gameshow on cable channel Bravo.

He is also one third of the spoof ecowarrior troupe Cyderdelic (alongside Marc Wootton and Liam Woodman), who made a six-part BBC Three series and made regular appearances on Channel 4's 11 O'Clock Show.

BBC confirms Greg Davies will be back as The Cleaner

New writers named

BBC comedy festival logoThe BBC has confirmed the second season of Greg Davies comedy The Cleaner.

Last month, Chortle reported how Davies would be sharing the writing duties on the second series of his show about a crime-scene cleaner. And today, at its Comedy Festival in Newcastle, the BBC has confirmed that roster of co-writers will be Paul Allen, Ronan Blaney, Barry Castagnola, Meg Stalter and Mike Wozniak, Davies' co-star on Channel 4's Man Down and former Taskmaster contestant.

Davies said: ‘It was such a pleasure bringing Wicky and his gory career to life and I’m beyond thrilled we get to do it again. So thrilled that I intend not to mention how sweaty that hazmat suit gets under lighting. Put it like this, we had to burn it. Anyway, I’m still excited, thanks BBC.’

Six new episodes have been ordered, plus a Christmas special.

The first series of The Cleaner aired in a Friday 9:30pm slot last autumn, with episode one attracting 1.9 million viewers on TV, rising to 5.5 million by the end of the year thanks to iPlayer catch-up.

Each episode revolves around a different messy death, which allows for a number of guest stars. Those in series one included David Mitchell, Helena Bonham Carter, Stephanie Cole, Ruth Madeley, Layton Williams and Jo Hartley

The series was adapted from the German comedy Der Tatortreiniger, which ran for 31 episodes between 2011 and 2018

Executive producer Vivien Muller Rommel says: ‘We’re absolutely delighted to be back for a second series of the Cleaner, and the Christmas Special is going to be bloody marvellous, I promise.’
