Happy Birthday Taylah Whelan
Melbourne International Comedy Festival review
Quite reasonably, the word-of-mouth rumblings surrounding Happy Birthday Taylah Whelan focus mostly on the comedian’s animatronic double act-partner, a not-so-lifelike rendering of her childhood pet Elvis.
The doll’s wide-set eyes and elongated neck might be more reminiscent of E.T. than a domestic cat, but these attributes – along with his penchant for gutter-minded innuendo – make Elvis a pretty unforgettable feline.
And yet there is so much else to admire in Whelan’s show.
She invites the audience to the birthday parties of her childhood, painting a picture of her upbringing through snapshots of each milestone’s celebration. Between a tough-loving Irish mother and an emotionally unavailable father, it’s no wonder she and Elvis form a relationship worth reanimating onstage years later.
Against a minimalist set, bespoke props add colour and whimsy to Whelan’s world. From the ever-changing pop-band posters on her bedroom walls to the books that line her shelves, Whelan recreates the iconic artefacts of her young-adulthood using materials found in the average arts and crafts box, most notably felt. These elements of whimsy amplify the theme of nostalgia that Whelan sets out to explore.
Whelan’s is a fully realised comic persona that is somehow just as grounded as it is fully formed. It’s tempting to imagine there being little difference between her selves on and offstage, not because there is so little craft visible in her performance, but because she imbues her stage character with such staunch realism – a particularly brazen feat for someone standing beside an animatronic cat in a world of felt.
Things take a hard turn towards the emotional in the show’s final five minutes, where the search for a fitting denouement doesn’t quite land.
Whelan plays the moment with a moving sincerity, but the abrupt tonal shift hits with the whiplash of a surprise birthday party all the same. Perhaps this attempt at depth wouldn’t feel so unearned if Whelan’s hadn’t so consummately guided our emotional responses throughout the rest of the hour.
That said, this is an impressive show from a brilliant emerging talent. Happy Birthday Taylah Whelan will leave you feeling that your lollybag overfloweth.
