Ghosts team tease a return to Button House

Let the speculation begin!

comedyIs Ghosts returning?

The cast took to social media yesterday to share a cryptic short video of the doors to Button House swinging open, sparking excitement and speculation.

The post prompted suggestions that the hit BBC sitcom is being revived for a Comic Relief sketch or perhaps its long mooted feature film. (UPDATE: it turned out to be the film)

It was posted by Mathew Baynton Jim Howick, Martha Howe-Douglas, Simon Farnaby and Laurence Rickard – the team who co-created the series with Ben Willbond, who isn’t on social media.

Last month, Baynton teased that that the team were ‘working on something’, when he appeared on Richard Herring’s  RHLSTP podcast.

Fans replied with excited  posts such as: ‘OH MY GOD SOMETHING IS HAPPENING’; ‘We are so MEGA excited at what this might mean’ and ‘Please tell me this is happening are we going back to Button House?! Are we getting a movie or another series? Whatever it is. I’m beyond excited about this! Can’t wait to see it’s going to be. I have missed ghosts so much.’

Also starring Charlotte Ritchie, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Lolly Adefope and Katy Wix, Ghosts ran for five series on BBC One between 2019 and a 2023 Christmas special, concluding with Ritchie and Smith-Bynoe's Alison and Mike leaving Button House as they started a family, but shown periodically returning to meet up with the ghosts in their old age.

Ghosts previously shot a Comic Relief sketch in 2023 with Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan.

BBC Studios announced this week that there will be a Czech version of the show and a second series of the German remake, meaning there are now seven adaptations worldwide, with the US version already on its fifth series.
