Applications now open to Welsh talent
Applications are now open for the Comedy Lab Cymru, a development programme for Welsh and Wales-based comedy talent.
Now in its third year, the scheme, run by Channel 4, S4C and production company Little Wander, provides paid development time, professional mentorship, industry masterclasses and chances to broaden knowledge of the comedy industry.
Six participants will be selected, with at least half working in the Welsh language. The successful applicants will be paired with mentors to develop comedy pieces for showcase at the Machynlleth and Aberystwyth Comedy Festivals in 2026, where they will perform to audiences and commissioners from both broadcasters.
This year's participants included Mel Owen, Cerys Bradley, Harri Dobbs, Fflur Pierce, Carwyn Blayney and Gruffudd Owen, who worked on projects ranging from sitcom scripts to stand-up sets, an interactive choose-your-own-adventure show and a sketch show.
Previous cohorts have emerged from the programme with pitch-ready sitcom pilots, hour-long stand-up shows, radio writing credits and increased industry recognition.
Owen said: 'Being a part of the Comedy Lab provided me with an excellent opportunity for structured mentorship, which really gave me the floor to ask questions I've felt too silly to raise in the past! Low-key jealous I can't do the scheme all over again!'
Bradley, pictured, praised the ‘invaluable’ one-on-one mentorship, adding: ‘I gained so much working one on one with my mentor. The programme both made sure that I actually wrote my script but also that the script is so much better under her guidance.
‘I also gained a lot from the workshops, we got to hear from a lot of different perspectives on the industry. My favourite thing, though, was meeting all the other people on the programme. I talked to a lot of them about my show and performances and I'm really glad I've made those connections which I hope will last beyond the programme.’
And Blayney said: 'I would recommend Comedy Lab Cymru to everyone who can apply. I have got so much out of it, from meeting amazing people in the industry, getting to write and perform in superb showcases and collaborating with really funny, talented people.'
Applications from individuals, duos or groups are welcome. Applicants must be Welsh or based in Wales, though Welsh artists living elsewhere in the UK can also apply. The application form is available here and the deadline is January 12.
