Brewers give comic award for his contribution to Scottish culture

Iain Stirling has been given an award for his contribution to Scottish culture because of his ‘top patter’ and Love Island commentary.

The comic has been honoured with a Tennent’s Golden Can by the brewery – with the announcement timed for maximum publicity, coming just before the iTV2 show returns for a fifth season next Monday.

Previous winners of the award, which was set up in 2017 have included Doctor Who star Karen Gillan,  graphic novelist Mark Millar and YouTube make-up influencer Jamie Genevieve.

Stirling said: ‘Finally some recognition for all those years spent drinking cans! Thank you, Tennent’s - it’s a real honour to be joining the likes of Irvine Welsh, Martin Compston and, of course, Biffy Clyro.’

Alan McGarrie of Tennent’s said: ‘Who else has infiltrated the nation with the sarcastic sense-of-humour us Scots are known for more than Iain? This, in our eyes, makes him a fantastic addition to the Golden Can Hall of Fame.’
