Free advice on showbiz contracts

...offered at this year's Edinburgh Fringe

Writers can get free legal tips to help them negotiate the world of contracts at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe.

Intellectual property rights experts from BTO Solicitors will be sharing their advice in two sessions entitled Entertainment and Publishing Contracts: A Guide for the Wannabe at Fringe Central.

Partner Paul Motion said: ‘The first offer of a deal can understandably be a hugely exciting occasion for the aspiring artist or author, however, it is vital to keep your feet on the ground and consider the terms of the proposed arrangement carefully: this is your future.

‘Historically, entertainment and publishing contracts have tended to be heavily weighted in favour of managers, producers and publishers. We will try to flag the most common pitfalls.

‘As strong supporters of the wider arts community, we want to help performers and writers secure the fairest possible contracts.  Our dedicated sessions will look at what terms contracts should contain and what performers and authors should try to negotiate out before signing a new deal – guidance which we hope will serve them well throughout their careers.’

The free shows will take place on Thursday August 9 at 11.30am and August 16 from 4pm. Free tickets are available here
