Mark Gatiss to investigate 'forgotten' painter John Minton

New film for BBC Four

League Of Gentlemen star Mark Gatiss is to present a documentary about 20th century British artist John Minton for BBC Four.

Subtitled The Lost Man Of British Art, the programme promises ‘a personal quest to uncover the forgotten talent’ of the painter and illustrator, who took his own life in 1957 at the age of 39. He had been out of fashion with the abstract trend of the time and is said to have felt increasingly sidelined.

Gatiss said: ‘I’m thrilled to be celebrating my love of this unjustly neglected artist on BBC Four. John Minton's life and art shine a dazzling light on a Soho long gone and a vanished England.’

The BBC says that for Gatiss, ‘John Minton has been something of an obsession since he first came across his work as a teenager, and in this personal film he tells the story of Minton’s colourful, complex life for the first time on television.’

The programme will air on  BBC Four this summer.
