A first as he plays Soho Theatre Walthamstow

New Zealand comedian Guy Montgomery is bringing his spelling bee  to London for the first time.

His Guy Mont-Spelling Bee, which began during lockdown as a livestreamed video call and has since grown into a television series, sees comedians attempt to spell words while being distracted by the host. The show has run for multiple series on ABC in Australia and New Zealand and is available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.

Now the format – which has formerly been played at the Edinburgh Fringe –  will be coming to Soho Theatre Walthamstow on September 2.

Previous guests on the TV version have included Tim Minchin, Hannah Gadsby, Rose Matafeo and Rhys Nicholson, while live show guests have included Nish Kumar, Tim Key and Lolly Adefope.

Montgomery said: 'In many ways, England is the spiritual home of nearly all the words I know. I am very excited to bring my Spelling Bee to London for the first time! Growing up I always lived under the illusion that British people are smarter than me and I look forward to finally being able to find out whether or not this is true.'

Pre-sale tickets go on  general sale opening fromt 10am on Friday.
