Netflix appoints its first UK head of comedy
Streamer indicates new commitment to the genre
Netflix has appointed its first UK head of comedy – signalling a bigger commitment to the genre.
Liz Lewin – a former Sky and Channel 4 commissioner who was executive producer on Lisa McGee’s Derry Girls and London Irish and upcoming Netflix comedy-drama How To Get To Heaven From Belfast (pictured) – takes the job.
Her task will be to commission shows with global appeal but a local angle.
Netflix has had a number of UK-based drama and comedy-drama hits such as Adolescence, Sex Education and Baby Reindeer, but has had less focus on out-and-out comedy. Rowan Atkinson’s Man vs Bee and Man Vs Baby have been rare exceptions.
Until now, comedy has been commissioned by its scripted team, including Chris Sussman and Jon Montague.
