Bit of hush, please...
The week's best comedy on TV, radio and streaming
Our pick of the comedy on TV, radio and streaming this week…:
Monday May 5
SILENCE IS GOLDEN: It’s a bit like Amazon’s Last One Laughing, but also very different. In this new show, presented by Dermot O’Leary, a studio audience is given £250,000 – but every time they make a noise, the pot decreases – and there’s a green room of entertainers headed up by Katherine Ryan, Seann Walsh and Fatiha El-Ghorri attempting to make them crack. Distractions employed in episode one include knife-throwers, a naked lady and comedians Reuben Kaye, Laura Smyth and Emmanuel Sonubi. Series creator Richard Bacon talks about the show here. U&Dave, 9pm
ANNA HAUGH’S BIG IRISH FOOD TOUR: In the first episode of this new series Katherine Ryan joins celebrity chef Anna Haugh in the city of Cork - the ‘foodie capital of Ireland’ - where memories of her grandmother’s ‘over-boiled and under-seasoned’ dinners have left the comedian with a bad impression of Irish food. Ed Byrne is her guest on Thursday, when the comic and keen hill-walker visits the Wicklow Mountains. BBC Two, 6.30pm
Tuesday May 6
DAD’S ARMY AT THE BBC: To mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, Toby Jones – who played Captain Mainwaring in the 2016 film revival - presents a set of Dad's Army moments from the BBC's archives, including the original Mainwaring, Arthur Lowe, dancing and sparring with Morecambe and Wise and a special tribute to Noel Coward. It’s followed by a classic episode, Branded, when the bravery of the gentle and well-mannered Pte Godfrey is called into question. BBC Two, 7.30pm
DAVID SPADE: DANDELION: The latest stand-up special from the former Saturday Night Live cast member and co-star of the forthcoming buddy comedy Busboys lands on Amazon's Prime Video.
Thursday May 8
ANDREW MENSAH: MEDIA TRAINED: This new series of YouTube shorts from Sky sees Fantasy Football League’s Andrew Mensah sharing 'unfiltered moments, playful banter and unexpected confessions' with celebrities from youth culture, including football stars, trailblazing musicians and internet names.
SPINSTER: The latest BBC comedy pilot stars Amy Molloy as single, penniless poet Ruby, who has recently moved back home to live with her mum (Mary Moulds). When their strict Presbyterian neighbours descend on the home for the engagement party of her spoiled sister Eliza, Ruby's only job is to not shame the family... The script was written by Northern Irish-South African filmmaker Eileen Tracey. BBC 10.15pm
Friday May 9
HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU: David Tennant hosts with panelists Miles Jupp and journalist Beth Rigby joining team captains Paul Merton and Ian Hislop. BBC One, 9pm
NONNAS: In this new Netflix comedy film, Joe Scaravella (played by Vince Vaughn) risks everything to honour his late by opening an Italian restaurant with a group of local grandmothers as the chefs. The women he recruits are played by Lorraine Bracco, Brenda Vaccaro, Talia Shire and Susan Sarandon.
