Former comic says he welcomes the chance to clear his name

Russell Brand says he welcomes the chance to defend himself after being charged with rape and sexual assault.

The Metropolitan Police say the former comedian, now based in the US, faces one count each of rape, indecent assault and oral rape as well as two counts of sexual assault. The charges relate to four separate women.

The allegations relate to the 1999 rape of a woman in the Bournemouth area with the other charges relating to incidents in the Westminster district of London: a 2001 indecent assault, a 2004 oral rape and sexual  assault, and another sexual assault between 2004 and 2005.

In a video posted to X tonight, the 50-year-old borresponded to the development by saying: 'I was a fool before I lived in the light of the Lord. I was a drug addict, a sex addict and an imbecile

'But what I never was, was a rapist. I have never engaged in non-consensual activity - I pray that you can see that by looking in my eyes.'

'I'm now going to have the opportunity to defend these charges in court and I'm incredibly grateful for that.'

Brand has been interviewed multiple times by police since an investigation by The Sunday Times and Channel 4's Dispatches reported serious allegations against him dating from the time he was at the peak of his fame. The comic has always denied the claims, saying all relationships he has had have been consensual.

He has been summoned to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on May 2.  However, to compel Brand to return home, the Home Office would need to make an extradition request to American authorities.

Detective superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the police investigation, says: ‘The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers. The Met's investigation remains open and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case, or anyone who has any information, to come forward and speak with police.

‘A dedicated team of investigators is available via email at CIT@met.police.uk. Support is also available by contacting the independent charity, Rape Crisis.’
