Hackney Empire gig will also be available on iPlayer

BBC Radio 1Xtra is to host a comedy gala showcasing black stand-up talent that will also be available to watch on iPlayer. 

Eddie Kadi will MC the show at the Hackney Empire, introducing  Babátúndé Aléshé, Gbemi Oladipo, Kane Brown, Kyrah Gray, Michael Odewale, Ola Labib, Slim and Thanyia Moore.

Kadi, who is also curating the show, said: ‘Hackney Empire is the home of black comedy and I’m so proud to be hosting the BBC 1Xtra Comedy Gala, showcasing the superstars of our thriving scene alongside the next generation of new wave stars.’

It takes places on March 13 and  will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer and hear on BBC Sounds from early April.

Faron McKenzie, head of BBC 1Xtra, said: ‘We’re ready to celebrate the UK’s most brilliant comic talent. We’re proud to shine a spotlight on rising stars on the scene, and cannot wait to give our audiences an unforgettable night of laughter at the iconic Hackney Empire.’

Although recordings of most TV and radio shows are free, tickets for this cost £14 to £20 and are available here.
