BBC advertises for a comedy writer

Entry level job for radio and podcasts

The BBC has advertised an entry-level staff job for an up-and-coming comedy writer.

Whoever is chosen for the position will write on radio shows and podcasts made by the Corporation’s commercial wing, BBC Studios.

The department makes about 150 hours of content a year, including The News Quiz, Just A Minute, Dead Ringers and shows with stand-ups such as Mark Steel, Sarah Keyworth, Daliso Chaponda, Ellie Taylor and Darren Harriott.

Staff writers work closely with producers and contribute to scripts across the output of the department, from links for the hosts of panel shows  to sketches for topical shows.

According to the job advert: ‘The staff writer jobs are one way we find and encourage exciting new comic writers with the ambition to create their own series.

‘They will work on their own narrative and sketch ideas during the year, and by the end of the year with support from producers in the team, we hope to be pitching their ideas to commissioners.

‘If you love comedy and are brimming with ideas you want to get made, this is your dream job.’

Applicants should have at least two professional credits that are not just one-liners, which could reflect any work produced (or self-produced) including podcast, short film, online or on-stage as well as radio and TV credits.

It is a 12-month, four-day-a-week contract, with applications closing on January 3.
