Will Alma’s Not Normal get a second series?

The BBC are 'faffing' says creator Sophie Willan

Sophie Willan has accused the BBC of ‘faffing’ over whether to order a second series of her comedy Alma’s Not Normal.

The comedian won a Bafta for  writing the pilot episode – with the video of her celebrating the victory going viral during lockdown –  and the full series is currently airing to great acclaim.

But when Russell Howard asks her about a second series on his Sky Max show tonight, she says: ‘I’ve heard nothing yet. They’re faffing.

‘They want to keep you on your toes. I might just send them that video of me winning the Bafta.’

Willian, who also stars as the titular character, also said that the show was originally turned down because a posh TV executive  thought viewers would not find female heroin addicts amusing.

‘I had a commissioner not commission Alma a few years ago because he said, "Female heroin addicts are not funny, they’re frightening"

‘How wrong he was. He’s been to Eton and never met one, that’s what’s happened.’

Alma’s Not Normal has been hailed by critics, with The Guardian calling it  audacious television full of big laughs’ in a five-star review and the Telegraph hailing it ‘an idiosyncratic gem of a comedy which is rambunctious, romantic and somehow optimistic’.

The Russell Howard Hour is on Sky Max at 10pm tonight, and Willan’s comments were reported by the Sun and Daily Star.
