Gold to seek Britain’s greatest comedy character

Hosted by Sally Phillips

The Gold channel has ordered a three-hour special to find Britain’s greatest comedy character.

As with its previous show to find the best comedian, a jury of nine comedians, actors, writers and critics will argue it out under the guidance of judge Sally Phillips.

Members of the public will be able to vote for their favourites, before the jury whittle them down and rank the final top 30.

Iain Coyle, UKTV’s head of comedy entertainment, said: "I’m preparing myself for the onslaught of online fury and personal lobbying. These shows really make you realise what incredible talent and creativity there is in this country."

Gold channel director Gerald Casey added: "Comedy characters play such a huge part on Gold, so we’re thrilled to see who the nation and jury crown… there’s definitely going to be a lot of debate!"

Britain’s Greatest Comedy Character will air  next year
