Liam Williams joins new BBC Three comedy

Back To Life is written by Daisy Haggard and Laura Solon

Comedian Liam Williams has joined the cast of Daisy Haggard's new BBC Three series Back To Life.

The comedy-drama revolves around a Miri Matteson, played by Haggard, who has just been  released from prison after serving 18 years for a terrible crime. Haggard also wrote the six-part series with former Perrier-winner Laura Solon.

Filming has just got under way, prompting the BBC to reveal the full cast.

Geraldine James, who played Mrs Hudson in the Guy Ritchie film version of Sherlock Holmes, plays Mimi’s mum. Character actor Richard Durden will play her father and Jo Martin her parole officer ‘without a verbal filter’.

Williams – who had his own BBC Three hit with Pls Like – plays a chip shop owner called Nathan.

Characters also inlcude Miri’s first love Dom, (Jamie Michie), ex-best friend Mandy (Christine Bottomley) and next door neighbour Billy (Adeel Akhtar).

BBC comedy chief Shane Allen, said of the show: ‘The nimble story-telling dazzles and hooks you in right from scene one. Miri is a terrific creation as the viewer’s empathy ebbs and flows depending on our perception of what she might have done.

‘It’s a distinctive world of intriguing characters and laced through with off-beat humour. This series cements BBC Three’s reputation as the vital place to try out ambitious new forms and tones of narrative.’

This week it was also announced that Williams was making a new series for Radio 4 entitled Liam Williams Self Cares.
