Stephen Merchant joins the Gestapo

For new satire JoJo Rabbit

Stephen Merchant is to play a Gestapo agent in a new Second World war satire.

The Office co-creator plays Captain Deertz in the forthcoming JoJo Rabbit, and revealed the news on Instagram.

The film is directed by Taika Waititi, who previously heeled What We Do in the Shadows and Thor: Ragnarok

It follows a German boy, played by newcomer, (Roman Griffin) raised by a single mother (Scarlett Johansson), and whose only ally is his imaginary best friend (Waititi), a version of Hitler.

Merchant's part is thought to be a cameo.

He has just made the wrestling comedy Fighting With My Family with Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Lena Headey, Vince Vaughn and Florence Pugh, which is due out next year.
