BBC Three picks up Man Like Mobeen

Series for Guz Khan's sitcom

Guz Khan’s sitcom Man Like Mobeen has been picked up for a full series by BBC Three.

Previously piloted as a BBC Comedy Feed, the show  revolves around a 28-year-old former small-time drug dealer from Small Heath in Birmingham.

He is trying to follow his faith, lead a good life, and make sure his younger sister fulfils her potential – despite his criminal reputation and murky past chasing him.

Khan said: ‘Mobeen as a character epitomises the funny yet complex realities of life for young working class men and women in Britain today.

‘Inner-city Birmingham, in which the show is set, gets almost no positive representation in the media. Man Like Mobeen will at the very least give a "real" depiction of life in the ends.

‘I'm so honoured to be able to bring this character to you, and I hope the people of Brum will be proud of what we produce, and have a real character that they can finally relate to.’

Four 22-minute episodes have been commissioned from Cave Bear Productions, BBC Three controller Damian Kavanagh announced at the Edinburgh TV Festival today.

He said: ‘I loved Man like Mobeen when it first came to BBC Three via the Comedy Feeds and I'm delighted to have brilliant comedic talent like Guz back in this new series.’

BBC comedy chief Shane Allen added: ‘Guz Khan is hugely talented and through his character Mobeen we hope he’ll not only make a brilliantly funny new series but provide a new and unique comedy voice.’

Khan first came to prominence through his online videos which are performed in the guise of Guzzy Bear and included a variety of characters, including Mobeen.

He has co-created the series with Andy Milligan, who also created the Dave sitcom Undercover starring Daniel Rigby, Sarah Alexander and Ryan Sampson He has also been Ant and Dec's only full-time writer for ten years.
