Grotbags star dies at 74

From cabaret performer to Rod Hull's nemesis

St Peter will be prancing around Heaven today chanting: ‘There’s somebody at the door!’

For Carol Lee Scott, who played best known as Grotbags the witch on children’s TV, has died at the age of 74.

She came to fame alongside Rod Hull in Emu’s World in  the 1980s before going it alone

Among those paying tribute was Rufus Hound, who said she was ‘an icon for folk of my generation’.

Scott started her career as a club cabaret performer, pub singer and Pontins Blue Coat. She and Hull concocted the character of Grotbags while performing a summer season in Cleethorpes.

Her niece Gina Mear broke the news of Scott's death on Facebook.

She wrote: ‘My dear aunty Carol lost her brave fight against cancer yesterday. To many of you she was Grotbags - a legend! To me she was just aunty Carol. I shall miss her hugely, rest in peace Carol.’
