Jimmy Carr signs Netflix deal

UK first as he shuns DVDs

Jimmy Carr is to become the first British comedian to make an original stand-up special for Netflix.

The comic will record his Funny Business show at Hammersmith Apollo this weekend for the US-based streaming service – instead of his traditional DVD release.

He has released eight stand-up discs since 2005's debut, Live, but wrote on Twitter today: 'DVD is dead.'

Carr added: 'Thanks to everyone who's bought my DVDs over the years - sadly it's the end of an era, there's no DVD this Christmas. But that's not all folks.

'Pleased to announce I'm taping a Netflix Original Comedy Special this weekend.'

The special – produced by his agents Chambers and production company Fulwell73 – will to be available worldwide next year.

Carr is not the only comedian to be leaving DVDs as the market shrinks, as 2015 also marks the final DVD releases for Roy Chubby Brown after 25 years.

However Michael McIntyre, Kevin Bridges, Alan Carr, Noel Fielding, Dara O Briain, and Paul Chowdhry are among those releasing discs this year. See our Coming Soon page for the full schedule.
