Clarkson WILL host Have I Got News For You

BBC give axed presenter the go-ahead

Jeremy Clarkson is to host Have I Got News For You, despite the BBC axing him from Top Gear for attacking his producer.

The presenter was suspended from the corporation during an internal investigation into the ‘fracas’ which left producer Oisin Tymon with a split lip. Clarkson’s contract, which was expiring anyway, not renewed.

But the BBC say their decision does not mean he is banned from their airwaves. A BBC spokeswoman said: ‘Jeremy’s contract has not been renewed on Top Gear but he isn’t banned from appearing on the BBC.’

Clarkson will guest host the edition of Have I Got News For You which airs on April 24, a day after it is recorded in London.

Last month, Jimmy Mulville, from producers Hat Trick, said he thought Clarkson was ‘a fantastic broadcaster’ and hoped he would be given the green light to return to the show. Mulville joked: ‘Maybe we will get the producer on so he can hit Jeremy Clarkson live on television.’

Whatever happens on the show, Clarkson’s high-profile return to the BBC is likely to provide a ratings boost.
