Character day on Radio 4

Vicar of Dibley Geraldine Granger is to deliver Radio 4’s Thought For The Day as the station dedicates a day to fictional and comedy characters.

Dawn French will deliver the religious message during the flagship Today programme on Saturday March 29, with a script written by Richard Curtis.

During the Character Invasion day, the original cast of The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy will also reunite for a special performance, broadcast live from the BBC Radio Theatre in Broadcasting House, with the voice of the book being provided by Douglas Adams’s long-time collaborator, the QI and Blackadder producer John Lloyd.

Meanwhile, wildlife expert Chris Packham will be reporting from the streets of New York, hot on the trail of Big Bird for Tweet for the Day.

Gwyneth Williams, the controller of Radio 4 said: ‘I am delighted to announce anarchy on Radio 4 for a day when some of our favourite characters from drama, literature and comedy will be dropping in and out of the schedule when you least expect it to explore and examine the nature of character.’
