Comic performs at traffic lights

An out-of-work comedian has taken to telling his gags to motorists waiting at traffic lights after his local club closed down.

Don Hepner waits on an off-ramp of Interstate 74 in Davenport, Iowa, charging motorists 50 cents a joke. He says he makes around $20 an hour from his quick, clean quips, after getting a begging licence from the city council.

Hepner, who has been performing comedy for 13 years, told the WQAD TV station that he came up with the idea after his local Penguin's club shut down earlier this year.

‘There isn't any place in the area for us to do comedy, so I said, '”I'll go up and do it on the off-ramp.”

‘I'm doing this because I want to tell jokes, [but[ I also get some drive-by heckling.’
