Brooker beats ITV's big hitters

Triumph at RTS Awards

Charlie Brooker’s modest BBC Four show has defeated big-budget ITV flagships, Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor to win a major TV award..

Newswipe, partly filmed in his own front room, was named best entertainment show at the Royal Television Society awards in London last night, contributing to a poor night for ITV..

The commercial broadcaster won only two awards: One for Harry Hill as best entertainment performance – ahead of Michael McIntyre and Ant and Dec – and one for best drama serial for Unforgiven..

Also among the BBC’s haul of nine accolades was The Thick Of It, which won the best scripted comedy award..

The ceremony, held at Grosvenor House, was hosted by Rob Brydon.
