194 complaints for C4 comedy

Kevin Bishop’s Channel 4 sketch show attracted almost 200 complaints last month – making it the second most controversial programme on the channel.

Its 194 calls and emails was a long way behind Big Brother, with 4,000 complaints, but more than twice as many as the next most disliked programme, atheist cheerleader Richard Dawkins' polemic The Genius of Charles Darwin.

His programme received 85 complaints – but another 25 calls in praise of its stance, according to figures reported by TV industry website Broadcastnow.

One viewer reportedly said of The Kevin Bishop Show: ‘I found it to be absolutely disgusting. I cannot comment for everyone, but the material he is using was not only offensive but in very very poor taste.

‘Please consider taking this programme off air as it has caused offence to so many people.’

In total, C4 received 5,474 criticisms and 450 compliments by phone and e-mail.
