Gavin & Stacey bound for BBC One

TV chief's wish

BBC Three comedy Gavin and Stacey looks set to make the leap to mainstream BBC One.

The corporation’s head of television, Jana Bennett, said she would ‘love’ to see the show’s forthcoming Christmas special air on the flagship channel.

She said the comedy was an example of how the BBC spotted the talent in writers James Corden and Ruth Jones.

‘These first-time writers brought a film script to the BBC with the idea fully formed,’ she told the Banff TV festival in the Canadian Rockies. ‘We suggested they turn it into a series - but beyond that we didn't meddle. When you spot writing of such quality you just don't.

‘We removed it from the glare of ratings, playing the first two series on BBC Three and it found a devoted following. This year, I'd love to see the Christmas special play out on BBC One.’

The rights to the show have also been sold to the NBC network in the US.
