Knocked Up, or knocked off?

Author sues over film

An author is suing the makers of the new comedy movie Knocked Up, claiming they stole the idea from her.

Canadian Rebecca Eckler wrote a book of the same name in 2004, in which an up-and-coming newspaper reporter drunkenly becomes pregnant after a one-night stand at a party.

The premise is identical to that of the new film, which topped the US box office last weekend, taking $30.6 million.

Eckler is now suing distributor NBC Universal and writer-director Judd Apatow - who was also responsible for The 40-Year-Old Virgin – for unspecified damages.

She says she learned of Apatow's project while pitching her book to Hollywood producers.

However Apatow said: ’Anyone who reads the book and sees the movie will instantly know that they are two very different stories about a common experience.’
