ITV orders cycling cops comedy

ITV has commissioned a new comedy, Bike Squad, about cycling policemen.

Drop the Dead Donkey co-creator Guy Jenkin has been signed up to write a 90-minute pilot.

And if ITV comedy boss Paul Jackson likes the result, it will be shot later this year, ready to air early in 2008.

MediaGuardian reports that Mark Addy, the star of recent ITV1 comedy drama Bonkers, is likely to play the lead.

Jenkin said: ‘It is about policemen who are shunted off to this squad because basically they are not very good as policemen.’

Tiger Aspect, which will make the programme, hopes for a full series if it performs well

Since Jackson was appointed last year, ITV1 has been striving hard to find more comedy hits, with commissions for Benidorm, Get A Grip, and Al Murray's Happy Hour, and moving Harry Hill's TV Burp to a higher-profile slot.
